There are several million alpacas worldwide with 94 percent living in South America. There are more than 200,000 alpacas in the USA, 350,000 in Australia and 45,000 in the UK. The alpacas' fleece, or wool, evolved to keep them warm in the high, arid, Altiplano, where it is common to have vast temperature changes from negative numbers well into the 70's , within 24 hours.
